Shocking Stat

Shocking statistics… 80-90% of those individuals whom grind their teeth while sleeping suffer from associated sleep apnea. 4% of women and 9% of men in the US suffer from sleep apnea. 90% of them have no idea. They have not been diagnosed. Sleep studies should be part of annual physicals. Ask you Dr. to refer you for a sleep study. Especially if you’re over the age of 50, and snore.  Dr. Jon Monette     South Bay Sleep Solutions.

Advantages of Oral Appliance Therapy/CPAP Alternative.

Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) over other forms of therapy like CPAP use or surgery:
Oral appliances are comfortable and easy to wear. Most people find that it only takes a couple of weeks to acclimate to wearing the appliance.
Oral appliances are small and convenient making them easy to carry when traveling vs. CPAP devices.
Bed partners sleep a lot better.
Treatment with oral appliances is reversible and non-invasive.
A large percentage of CPAP user frequently remove the CPAP device during the night. The oral appliance is removed much less frequently, therefore, treatment of sleep apnea is more consistent. Dr. Jon Monette

What are Sleep Disorders?

Sleep disorders refer to a variety of sleep dysfunctions that involve the respiratory system, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea, which is an extremely serious condition. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common. Over 18 million Americans suffer from OSA. 90% of all people with OSA go undiagnosed and untreated. Dentist are the first line of defense because most primary care physician do not understand the dynamics of the oral cavity and upper airway. Ask your dentist if they see evidence of obstructive sleep apnea. Clues would be snoring, redness in the back of the throat, wear of teeth from grinding, large tongue, small retruded lower jaw, deep palate, large uvula, evidence of gastric reflux, and there are many other signs and symptoms. What causes snoring?

Snoring occurs when the soft tissue structures of the upper airway collapses onto themselves and vibrate against each other as we attempt to move air though them. This produces the sound we know as snoring. Large tonsils, a long soft palate, a large tongue, a small lower jaw, the uvula and excess fat deposits in the throat all combine to airway narrowing and snoring. Sleep position, for example individuals who sleep on their back, also can cause snoring. Excessive alcohol use can also be a factor in increased snoring. Research shows a large percentage of snorers have or develope obstructive sleep apnea at some point. Ask your dentist or family physician if you can be screened for these symptoms. Dr. Jon Monette.

Treatment for Sleep Apnea

Good sleep hygiene, weight loss and exercise are some helpful treatments an individual can practice on their own. However medical and dental treatments include the use of a CPAP device, an oral appliance which holds the lower jaw out while sleeping(greatly reduces snoring too), and/or surgery which is the least desired treatment. CPAP is the gold standard of treatments, however many user never wear the device enough to help. An alternative is the use of an oral appliance that holds your lower jaw forward and opens the airway. This device has been FDA approved and the patient compliance is much better than CPAP.  It is also covered by most medical insurances.  Dr. Jon Monette

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the throat during deep sleep and causes a blockage in air flow. When this occurs for a long enough period of time (10 sec or more) it causes the brain to react. The drop in oxygen level signals the brain to wake the individual from deep sleep. This constant awaking also prevents the rest we need to restore/refresh our brain leading to unrefreshed sleep and feeling of constants fatigue.

Snoring is known to be a warning sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It is a partial closing of the airway.

If you are drowsy throughout the day or are told you snore you may be suffering of OSA. Ask your dentist for a sleep Dr. referral to be diagnosed.

My Mission Is To Help

Many years ago my family and I witnessed my grandpa stop breathing while he was taking his after lunch naps. He would finish his lunch and excuse himself to his favorite easy chair and fall asleep shortly after getting settled. He would start to snore and it was loud. We all thought it was hilarious. While he was snoring we would notice he was also stopping his breathing for what seemed like forever. Then he would gasp suddenly for air and start snoring again. It was amusing to us. Sadly I understand now he was also slowly dying. This ritual took place for years and none of us were ever aware this was causing harmed to our beloved grandfather. If I only had the knowledge then I have now. Perhaps he would still be with us. If you’re aware of this happening to someone you know and love. Please have them seek a consultation with a Sleep Specialist. Sincerely Dr. Jon Monette.
